I was able to speak to this little town's one and only graffiti officer at the Portland Anti-Graffiti Summit that was held last week. He told me that even though his city is small (12,000 people) they have a huge gang problem and thus a huge graffiti vandalism problem.

Graffiti on freeway signs is annoying. Not only does it obstruct your direction, it sends the wrong message of the town you are passing through. This is a common complaint of drivers along the freeways or hi-ways. But cities are not the ones that clean up this graffiti, it's the DOT.

Today the focus is on Lakewood Township, NJ and their campaign to fight graffiti (particularly gang graffiti). Collaborating with the Ocean County Corrections Department, Lakewood has their work cut out for them locating and painting over local graffiti sites.

"For the next few weeks, officials are asking people to call the Quality of Life Hotline [732-942-5003] to report any graffiti they see on public buildings and structures, including schools, libraries, community centers and telephone poles."

GraffitiAbatement.org has added Lakewood Township, NJ to the list of New Jersey cities that offer a Hotline Number to report graffiti. Make The Right Call! Let's get Lakewood cleaned up!!!

2005 - 178 (9% increase)
2006 - 226 (27% increase)
2007 - 320 (42% increase)
2008 - 383 (20% increase)*
